Habanos keeps UK Cuban prices inflated

Filed under: Cigars, Cuban Cigars admin March 20, 2006 @ 2:14 pm

Not exactly breaking news, but pretty interesting, apparently a UK cigar seller tried importing Cubans into the UK without Habanos’ permission. The cigars were siezed at customs and the seller went to court.

“..the High Court ruled effectively that prices should remain unchanged when it upheld the right of the Corporación Habanos to prevent its cigars from being imported into the UK from Cuba without its consent.”

At least you can legally buy Cubans in the UK!

Drew Estate Dirt

Filed under: Cigars admin January 28, 2006 @ 9:31 am

I smoked a Drew Estate Dirt several days ago. After smoking a real Cohiba in the Caribbean a week earlier, I can honestly say I enjoyed the Drew Estate Dirt a lot more (it didn’t help that the Cohiba was sitting in my air conditioned room for a couple of days drying out either.) Despite its name, the Dirt tastes nothing like dirt. The flavour is smooth and chocolaty. I really can’t compare it to any other cigar I’ve smoked. Its a little on the expensive side (for not being a Cuban) but I still recommend smoking at least one!

New Cigars Soon

Filed under: Cigars, Drew Estate Cigars Jason January 9, 2006 @ 12:25 pm

The first week in January is already over with and I haven’t smoked a cigar in months! This cold, dreary, winter weather is killing me! Within in the next week or two though, Andrew and I are going to be ordering at least one box of Baccarats. If the money is there, we’ll probably add a box of some Drew Estate cigar to the bill as well.

It has just been way too long since I last smoke a good stogie and can’t wait for the nice weather to come.

Its been a while since I’ve smoked a cigar

Filed under: Cigars admin December 10, 2005 @ 7:19 pm

I haven’t smoked a cigar in months. Its been a combination of time, weather, and money. For a while there I was just spending way too much on cigars so I decided to give it a break. Now the weather is freezing outside and I’m not going to be lighting any up indoors. I’ve got a lonely Romeo y Julieta sitting in my humidor drying out despite all the water I put in the humidifier.

I’m thinking about picking up a box of Baccarat #1s and letting them sit for a while until it warms up a little bit. In the meantime, I might pick up a few smaller cigars so that my smoking experience does not include frostbite.

Forbes picks up on teen cigar smoking

Filed under: Cigars admin December 10, 2005 @ 7:16 pm

This isn’t the first story on teen cigar smoking and it won’t be the last. I’m don’t think this is even news anymore. Time to find something a little more interesting.

“We may be deceiving ourselves into thinking that we are winning the war against smoking based solely on the figures relating to cigarette smokers, without focusing on the figures related to cigar smokers,” said John Banzhaf III, executive director of the Action on Smoking and Health organization. Banzhaf, public interest law professor at George Washington University Law School, is familiar with the findings of the new report.

Teen Cigar Smoking

Here is a story from Fox 19 Cincinnati. More high school students have smoked cigars than cigarettes. The anti-smoking police say this is because taxes have not effected cigars. The story says that a pack of cigs is around $5 while a cigar is 59 cents.

I think this story leaves more questions than it answers. Are they smoking cigars daily? (Even most avid cigar smokers don’t.) Are they inhaling the cigars? Are they smoking Swishers or Opus X’s?

Personally, I think that excessive anti-cigarette campaigns over the past decade are largely responsible for a move away from cigarettes toward other tobacco products.

Baccarat and Helix: SMOKED!

Filed under: Cigars Jason August 8, 2005 @ 3:01 pm

Last Wednesday, before I went on my fishing vacation, we smoked the cigars we recently purchased. Again, Andrew had the Helix and I had the Baccarat. The Baccarat I smoked started with a good taste, but turned quite harsh towards the end. Nonetheless, it was a good smoke and I’ll probably smoke another in no time. The Baccarat would of been better with some humidor time, but I couldn’t put off smoking such a good cigar.

Carlos Toraño

Last night Andy came over again and brought me a Carlos Toraño. Good taste, good draw, good smoke. If you’ve never tried a Carlos Toraño this is a must try — trust me.

Today, Andrew and I drove out to Port Tobacco to buy some butane for our torch lighters that we purchased about two weeks ago. We bought Firebird lighters and they seem to work quite well. Anyway, we ended up buying the butane along with a Baccarat — for me, and a Helix — for Andrew at Port Tobacco. I’ve never seen a cigar shaped the way my Baccarat is shaped. It’s just crazy!

Night of Fun

Filed under: Drew Estate Cigars Jason July 29, 2005 @ 9:37 am

Last night got a little crazy around here. My friend Andy came over and we started smoking stogies. I had one Jucy Lucy — by Drew Estate — left in the humidor so I decided to smoke that. All Drew Estate’s Natural line of cigars smell wonderful, but the Jucy Lucy has to be one of the best.

As the night progressed, Andrew put the wrong end of his La Vieja Habana into his mouth — that was quite humorous. I’m not sure what cigar Andy was smoking, but I’ll find out and post it later. As for me with my Jucy Lucy, I smoked the whole thing down to a tiny stub not ashing once. It was pretty insane.

Jose L. Piedra

Filed under: Cuban Cigars Jason July 26, 2005 @ 1:45 pm

After work yesterday, I lit up a Jose L. Piedra a friend of mine brought back from Spain. It’s the frist Cuban cigar I’ve smoked. I thought it was decent. The flavor was good and it was nice and smooth. The draw was a little tight, but other than that, I really don’t have any other complaints. It’s a cheaper Cuban Cigar, but still worth a try.

New Jersey Bill would ban smoking cigars in cars

Filed under: Cigars admin July 24, 2005 @ 11:36 pm

A proposed bill in New Jersey would would create a car smoking law. This would mean no more enjoying cigars while driving in that state. However, like the ban on hand-held cellphone use while driving it is unexpected to be enforced.

Tatiana Honey Cigar

Filed under: Flavored Cigars Jason July 23, 2005 @ 9:37 am

Yesterday Andrew and I ended up opening the tin of Tatiana Honey flavored cigars. We both agreed that it sure wasn’t the best cigar we have ever smoked, but it was still pretty decent. A couple of my dislikes were its small size along with how bitter it became after smoking about half of it. Other than that, the Tatiana Honey cigar was wraped well, had a good draw, and left a nice taste on your lips.

New Cigar Articles Added

I’ve added two new cigar articles. All of which can be accessed from our front page.

The articles today are Cigar Cutters and How to smoke a cigar.

La Vieja Habana Cigar

Filed under: Drew Estate Cigars Jason July 21, 2005 @ 11:33 am

Yesterday, after a long tiresome night of work, I sat out on my front porch and smoked a La Vieja Habana in the moonlight. It was a good smoke and lasted for about an hour. As non-expensive cigars go, this one is a winner hands down. Not to harsh, great draw, and good taste. Any cigar smoker should add a box of la vieja habanas to their collection.

Flavored Cigars

Filed under: Flavored Cigars Jason July 20, 2005 @ 2:10 pm

We just recieved our order of 50 flavored cigars. The order included 5 tins: Tatiana, Kahlua, Havana Honeys, Leon Jimenes, and CAO Earth Nectars. I’ve tried them all except the Tatianas.

I really didn’t know what to expect when I saw the tin of Leon Jimenes. They’re Caffe Macchiato flavored with a hint of milk. To my surprise it was a good smoke. They were smooth with an excellent tasting wraper. I would definitely recommend this cigar to those who haven’t smoked one before.

The CAO cigars were another excellent smoke. I’m definitely planning on buying a box of these in the future.

Cigar Ratings

Filed under: Cigars admin July 6, 2005 @ 9:49 pm

Instead of detailed reviews I’m just going to rate the cigars from my last sampler packs I’ve ordered. Note, I haven’t been able to smoke all of them because I shared some with my friends.

Instead of using numbers I have my own rating system. Here it goes:

  • Must smoke
  • Smoke when you get around to it
  • Don’t smoke
  • Its that simple! Ashes and tight wrappers are nice, but when it comes down to it a good cigar tastes good and a bad cigar tastes bad. 9 times out of ten the cigars that taste good smoke good.

    Acid 1400cc (No Tube) Natural 5 X 50
Must smoke. This was my second Drew Estate Acid cigar and it rocked.

    Acid Liquid Natural 5 X 50
Smoke when you get around to it. This was my first Drew Estate Acid cigar. I had high expectations that weren’t met.

    CAO Gold Robusto Natural 5 X 50
Must smoke. I plan on buying a box of CAO cigars just because of this one.

    Don Tomas Box pressed
Smoke when you get around to it. Not spectacular, could have used more humidor time. I’m not sure exactly which Don Tomas this was that I smoked.

    Griffin’s Fuerte Robusto Natural 4 3/4 X 48
Must smoke. Smooooth, a new favorite!

    Helix X550 Natural 5 x 50
    Must smoke. Another great cigar!

    Natural Clean Robusto Natural 5 X 50
Must smoke. Great taste — bad price.

    Olor Fuerte Robusto Dark Nat5 X 50
Smoke when you get around to it. Not bad.

    Romeo Y Julieta Bully Natural 5 X 50
Smoke when you get around to it. Not bad, another cigar I feel needed some humidor time.

Bella Vanilla Petit Corona Natural 4 x 38
Smoke when you get around to it. Fast smoke; can’t say I’m a fan of vanilla flavored cigars.

Havana Honeys Del Sol Rum Natural 5 1/2 x 42
Smoke when you get around to it. Worst draw I’ve ever had on a cigar. Felt like work smoking.

    Kahlua Corona Natural 5 x 42
Smoke when you get around to it. Good flavored cigar.

    Moontrance Corona Natural 5 1/4 x 42
Smoke when you get around to it. I had high expectations for this one that weren’t realized.

Tatiana La Vita Cinnamon Natural 5 x 34
Must smoke. My favoraite flavored cigar — good cigar to smoke while driving!
